Paleo-Cinema Podcast 138 - Miss Jane's Selection

This time around the movies were selected by Miss Jane as part of the Paleo-Cinema Patreon Campaign. The first movie is a 1933 comedy/drama starring Lionel and John Barrymore, Wallace Beery and Jean Harlow: Dinner At Eight. The second movie is the film thought to be the funniest American comedy of all time, the Billy Wilder directed Some Like It Hot, with Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon.

I also look at the strange and cinematic death of French jazz musician and polymath Boris Vian.

The movies this time are the 1949 Italian movie starring Orson Welles as Count Cagliostro: Black Magic, also starring Nancy Guild and Akim Tamiroff then we head to Broadway for the 1959 drama Career starring Tony Franciosa, Dean Martin, Shirley Maclaine and Carolyn Jones. We go from an 18th Century mesmerist and con man to a 20th Century actor.

Paleo-Cinema Podcast 134 - The Wages Of Fear on a Violent Road

For 134 we have two truckin' movies: the 1953 classic Henri-Georges Clouzot thriller Le Salaire De La Peur (Wages Of Fear) and the 1958 American remake of it, Warner Bros Violent Road starring Brian Keith and Efrem Zimbalist Jr. One is among the best thrillers of all time and the other is an honest B-picture dishonestly copied from the former.

Firstly, I look at Jules Dassin's 1950 London film noir, Night and the CIty starring Richard Widmar, Gene Tierney and Googie Withers, then take a look at the acting and directing career of Ida Lupino, from her start in London to her career as both an actor and a movie and tv director.

Paleo-Cinema 131 - Day For Night The Grapes Of Wrath

For this one we go from the south of France to the Okie dustbowl of the 1930s. From 1973 and Truffaut's La Nuit Americaine (Day For Night) with Jacqueline Bisset and Jean-Pierre Aumont to 1940 and  John Ford's The Grapes Of Wrath starring Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell.

Paleo-Cinema Podcast 129 - The Night Of The Iguana Robbery.

For 129 and to celebrate St David's Day  on March 1st, I'm looking at two movies starring Welsh actors. Firstly, the 1967 dramatisation of The Great Train Robbery, prosaically entitled Robbery starring Sir Stanley Baker, Joanna Pettet and James Booth. Secondly, there's the 1964 movie adaptation of Tennessee Williams' play, The Night Of The Iguana starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr and Grayson Hall.
